The Symbolism of Narcissus (Daffodils)
Fragrant daffodils (Narcissus), glowing as if illuminated by the first rays of the spring sun, are a symbol of the arrival of true spring warmth. Everyone knows the legend of the handsome youth Narcissus, who became so captivated by his own reflection in the water that he could not look away and eventually died. The gods transformed him into a beautiful spring flower.
It is this ancient Greek myth that gave the Narcissus its symbolic meaning in the language of flowers. However, its symbolism is associated not so much with vanity as with healthy self-love, self-respect, and inner harmony. Daffodils (Narcissus) also symbolize optimism and hope, as they bloom just when spring fully comes into its own.
The daffodil is also a symbol of spring and fertility. White daffodils have traditionally been associated with brides and new beginnings. In the language of flowers, the daffodil also represents shy love and may convey the message: "You are the only one."
Daffodils in Floristry and Bouquet Care
Daffodils are perfect both for mono bouquets and for pairing with other bulb flowers, particularly tulips, hyacinths, and lilies. They all share one characteristic: after being cut, they release a natural sap into the water that may have a negative effect on other flowers in the bouquet. For this reason, florists usually allow freshly cut daffodils to stand in water for several hours before incorporating them into an arrangement.
Caring for a daffodil bouquet also has a few special considerations. The stems should be trimmed straight across (this also applies to tulips and hyacinths), as this helps reduce the amount of sap released. It is best to do this every other time you change the water, rather than with every water change.
With proper care, these fragrant spring flowers can remain beautiful in a vase for 5–7 days.
