Are there any special care requirements for oxypetalum bouquets?
Oxypetalum is a fairly long-lasting cut flower, although there is one important detail to keep in mind. We always recommend changing the water regularly and refreshing the stem cuts. However, oxypetalum contains a white milky sap that gradually thickens and can block the vessels at the cut surface.
To prevent this, simply immerse the stem ends (approximately 1 cm) in boiling water for about a minute. This neutralizes the undesirable properties of the sap. After this treatment, the stems are lightly recut, leaving the heat-treated section intact, which allows the flowers to absorb water effectively.
An important note: the milky sap is toxic and may cause skin irritation. Therefore, if you need to remove leaves, it is advisable to wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly after handling the plant.
Our florists prepare oxypetalum in advance, so at home it is sufficient to change the water regularly and refresh the stem cuts.
